What to do After Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 Storm late Thursday evening then quickly swept across Georgia and the Carolinas early this morning. You may have sustained damage from this storm and may be wondering what to do next. Here’s what to do after Hurricane Helene!
Read the entire list below for what to do:
- Assess the scene for your safety and those around you. Do not go near downed power lines, leaning uprooted trees, standing water, etc.
- If the scene is safe, assess the damage to your property. That could be your home, auto, fence, shed, or commercial building. Take pictures and video.
- Try to mitigate against any further damage, i.e. tarp the hole in your roof or have a roofer do it, put out buckets to collect water, remove trees and debris from your property if manageable or call a tree removal service. Leave the property if it is unsafe.
- If damage occurred and you would like to file a claim, contact your insurance carrier. Their contact numbers can be found on our website.
- Begin collecting estimates for repairs so you can be ready to have a productive discussion with your adjuster.
- Make sure your insurance is paid up and in good standing. Otherwise, you might have a problem come claim time.
Please know that your insurance carriers are trained and ready to handle catastrophic events like this. They put all hands-on deck in these situations. That being said, it can take time for them to get to each and every person that needs attention. Please be patient and know they are working for you!
As always, have a good agent to help with any questions!
